CSET’s Zachary Arnold and Jacob Feldgoise shared their expert insights in an article published by Nature. The article explores China’s increasing presence in basic research on future computing hardware. Drawing on key findings from the ETO’s Research Almanac, the piece examines how this shift could shape the global landscape of high-performance microchip design and production.
Arnold noted that while China is not yet leading in the field, the trends indicate its future trajectory, stating, “Arguably, it’s showing us where things are headed.”
Feldgoise pointed out the broader implications of this trend stating, “China is experimenting with a lot of these next-generation technologies, which, if commercialized, would be very difficult for the United States to control.” He added, “If China is able to commercialize some of this technology, it’s not that they would be catching up, but potentially leap-frogging.”
