CSET’s Emily S. Weinstein provided expert insights in an article published by The Wall Street Journal that discusses the Biden administration’s plans to restrict Chinese companies’ access to U.S. cloud-computing services.
Cloud computing services allow people to use powerful computers and software without actually owning them. One example of a company providing such services is Nvidia.
“If any Chinese company wanted access to Nvidia A100, they could do that from any cloud service provider. That’s totally legal,” said Weinstein. According to Weinstein, instead of directly banning specific types of chips in cloud services, the administration has the option to limit U.S. cloud companies from providing services to users associated with military, security, or intelligence services in China and other countries that raise concerns.
