In an op-ed published in The Diplomat, Ngor Luong and Channing Lee discuss the rapid expansion of Chinese tech companies such as Alibaba, Tencent, and Huawei in Southeast Asia. The authors highlight how these companies are investing heavily in various areas, particularly in cloud services, cybersecurity, ICT infrastructure and services, and artificial intelligence.
The piece also draws from their CSET report authored with Magarita Konaev, which found that China’s role in Southeast Asia’s emerging AI markets is currently limited to Singapore, and its investment activity still lags behind that of the United States.
