CSET Lead Analyst, William Hannas provided his expert analysis in an article published by WIRED. The article discusses the unveiling of a brain-computer interface (BCI) by a Chinese company at a tech forum in Beijing. The interface, demonstrated with a monkey controlling a robotic arm through thoughts, highlights China’s advancement in BCI technology. While the US has tested similar systems for medical purposes, China’s progress extends to nonmedical applications, including cognitive enhancement.
Hannas emphasized China’s rapid progress in BCI technology, stating, “They’re strongly motivated… They’re doing state-of-the-art work, or at least as advanced as anybody else in the world.”
The article also cites Hannas’ recent report, titled “Bibliometric Analysis of China’s Non-Therapeutic Brain-Computer Interface Research“, which uses bibliometric analysis and expert assessment of technical documents to evaluate China’s BCI, and conclude that the research is on track to achieve its targets.
