Ashton Garriott

Ashton Garriott was a Semester Research Analyst at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), where he worked on the CyberAI Project. He is a recent graduate of Georgetown’s Security Studies Program, where he concentrated in technology and national security and was a National Science Foundation CyberCorps Fellow. Prior to his master’s program, Ashton worked as a cybersecurity engineer at the MITRE Corporation, advising government sponsors on cybersecurity policy, risk management and artificial intelligence. He also holds a B.S. from Georgetown University in Science, Technology, and International Affairs.

Cybersecurity operators have increasingly relied on machine learning to address a rising number of threats. But will machine learning give them a decisive advantage or just help them keep pace with attackers? This report explores the history of machine learning in cybersecurity and the potential it has for transforming cyber defense in the near future.
