This publication examines how emerging AI tools—including LLM-based chatbots and biological design tools—are reshaping the biosecurity landscape for commercial DNA synthesis. It outlines the distinct vulnerabilities introduced by these technologies, including ways they could evade or undermine existing provider screening practices, while also highlighting opportunities for AI to strengthen biosecurity safeguards. The authors offer six recommendations for the U.S. government aimed at harnessing the benefits of these tools while mitigating the risks they pose to the DNA-synthesis ecosystem.
