Sam Bresnick shared his expert analysis in an op-ed published by Lawfare. In his piece, he discusses the evolving military strategies of China under Xi Jinping, highlighting the country’s increasing engagement in risky military activities across various domains, including sea, air, and space, while simultaneously exhibiting a reluctance to responsibly manage military crises with the U.S.
Bresnick emphasizes the concerns surrounding AI’s role in military strategies, noting, “As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly plays a part in defense, a detailed review of over 50 Chinese academic articles on AI’s impact on the future of warfare reveals that many Chinese defense experts are concerned that the technology could lead to rapid, uncontrollable, and potentially catastrophic conventional—and even nuclear—escalations.”
Bresnick draws on insights from his recent report, China’s Military AI Roadblocks: PRC Perspectives on Technological Challenges to Intelligentized Warfare, which analyzes Chinese defense experts’ views on the technological obstacles China faces in advancing military AI and explores the technologies they believe will enable future advancements.
