In 2021, CSET will start a series of projects analyzing global trends in biotechnology. During the past decade, advances in the biosciences have created a range of new biotechnologies for medicine, agriculture, energy and materials. To develop appropriate policies, standards and norms for these technologies, leaders will need to remain aware of trends in global investments and capabilities. CSET aims to analyze these trends by leveraging our holdings of bibliometric data and translated documents and by applying methods of open source analysis that we’ve used in our past work on artificial intelligence and advanced computing. Our goal is to help government and society harness the potential of biotechnology to promote health and protect the environment while preventing its misuse. These early years will be critical for both developing smart policies that shape the bio-future and preparing the next generation of policymakers, analysts and diplomats to address biotechnology’s opportunities and challenges.
