CSET Director of Strategy and Foundational Research Grants, Helen Toner, provided her expert insights in an article published by The Economist. The article discusses the recent bilateral meetings between China and the United States, a notable development amidst their ongoing diplomatic tensions.
Toner highlighted the importance of maintaining dialogue, noting, “Even in periods of greater hostility, some of the tensest periods of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, there was still great value in making sure that you had open lines of communication. … No one wanted an unintentional nuclear holocaust.” She added, “Should we believe everything China tells us at these talks? No. Should we have the talks? I think yes. We’re not anywhere close to the point where it makes sense to totally cut off diplomatic ties.”
