Washington, DC – The Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University has been awarded $2 million from Google.org to make scientific research more accessible. The project will increase the utility and interpretability of scientific data by evaluating and implementing new LLM-based methods to extract research metadata, organize and describe the global scientific landscape, and identify emerging areas of activity.

“CSET is excited to continue our work making data and information on science and technology more usable and accessible, and to explore how LLMs can help us unlock new insights into S&T developments,” said Dr. Catherine Aiken, Director of Data Science and Research at CSET. “We are grateful to Google.org for their enthusiasm and support of this important work.”
The project will build on previous work by CSET to reveal key trends in global science and technology, including through its Map of Science, part of the CSET Emerging Technology Observatory (ETO). ETO offers a suite of publicly available, interactive tools that empower users to derive useful insights from data, from the Map of Science to Supply Chain Explorer, a guide to the complex supply chain for advanced computer chips, to AGORA, a living collection of AI regulations and standards from the US and around the world.
The new project will prioritize accessibility, usability, and reach. Scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders are among those who will benefit from being able to use the resulting tools to interpret bibliometric data and address historically thorny problems, like scientific horizon scanning and research impact tracking.
“At Google.org, we support organizations that are applying advanced technology to address real-world challenges,” said Sloan Davis, Senior Program Manager. “CSET’s work brings state-of-the-art AI methods to open research infrastructure in order to help users better understand emerging areas of science and innovation. We’re pleased to support this project and its commitment to making high-quality data and tools openly available.”
