We are currently seeking applications for our inaugural AI Research Subgrant (AIRS) Program Director. The recently established AIRS program seeks to promote the exploration of foundational technical topics that relate to the potential national security implications of AI over the long term. Topics of interest will be regularly updated, but currently include: methodologies for AI treaty verification, scalable AI assurance, anti-proliferation mechanisms for AI, AI standards and testing, and emerging technical issues at the interface between AI safety and policymaking/regulations.
The Director of AIRS will report to CSET’s Director and will be part of the CSET leadership team, with management responsibility for all technical, programmatic, and financial aspects of the new AIRS program.
- Identifying technical areas of research directly relevant to CSET’s AIRS research mandate – as informed by CSET analytic priorities, research tractability, and funder intent – and developing a subgranting strategy to support these research efforts;
- Establishing and nurturing relationships with relevant researchers and research communities to develop the AIRS program as a source for funding for innovative ideas, while inspiring leading researchers to engage on these challenging problems with mutually agreed upon goals and objectives;
- Creating and implementing processes for proposal elicitation, review, and subgrant awards in partnership with the CSET Operations team and Georgetown staff, as well as reporting on program execution regarding progress against interim milestones and overall program performance;
- Managing the AIRS Grant Administrator in all aspects of subgrant award, reporting, execution, in-scope delivery, and closeout;
- Facilitating information exchange between selected subgrantees and CSET team members so that early insights on emerging positive and negative findings will help facilitate collaboration and enhanced technical and contextual understanding;
- Briefing senior government policymakers and non-technical decision-makers on relevant AIRS findings;
- Convening workshops and other events to enable interfaces between subgrantees and members of the policy community and also improve connectivity between individual subgrant researchers or research teams.
- Masters Degree (M.S.) in Computer Science, other STEM degrees, quantitative social science, or other related field like Economics, Computational Linguistics, etc.;
- Substantive and demonstrated experience in research design and execution (5+ years);
- Multiple years of experience managing early to mid-career professionals and programmatic leadership experience (2+ years);
- Proficiency with office productivity tools like Google Docs and Sheets and Microsoft Office;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
This position is based in the United States and offers no relocation assistance. This position is not eligible for a specialty-occupation sponsorship and, accordingly, this position requires that all applicants be legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship from Georgetown University.
- PhD level education and research experience in areas similar to those that will be funded by the AIRS program (e.g., Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning, Mathematics, or other computational fields).
- Ability to serve as a thought leader among world-class researchers from academia, industry, and government.
- Established relationships (either as a researcher or program director) with technical researchers in areas related to AIRS research mandate.
- Prior experience in source selection and program management (e.g., DARPA, ONR, AFOSR); grant making and participation in grant reviews processes (e.g., NSF, NIH); and participation in peer review processes for scholarly literature publication, conferences papers or speakers, and funding decisions.
