Our Research

CSET produces evidence-driven analysis in a variety of forms, from informative graphics to expert testimony to published reports. Our key areas of inquiry are the foundations of artificial intelligence — such as talent, data and computational power — as well as how AI can be used in national security settings. We also do research on the policy tools that can be used to shape AI's development and use, and on biotechnology.

What We Do

CSET produces data-driven research at the intersection of security and technology, providing nonpartisan analysis to the policy community. CSET is currently focusing on the effects of progress in artificial intelligence (AI), advanced computing and biotechnology. We seek to prepare a new generation of decision-makers to address the challenges and opportunities of emerging technologies.

Our 2023 Progress Report

In honor of CSET’s fifth birthday, this annual report is a look at CSET’s successes in 2023 and over the course of the past five years. It explores CSET’s different lines of research and cross-cutting projects, and spotlights some of its most impactful research products.

The rapid proliferation of AI tools offers a unique opportunity to shift towards a more integrated, systems-oriented approach to policymaking. By making wise use of our policy levers, constantly evaluating their impacts, and standing ready to adjust as necessary, we can rise to the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities AI presents.
